Before the Marshal’s left me they reminded me, “don’t forget your cover and keep everyone at arm’s length.” If I blow my cover or reach out to any friends or family, there will be consequences. There’s a limit as to how many times they’re going to be willing to move me around. When they finally said goodbye Ed told me he’d come by monthly to see me and gave me a phone with his number already programmed in it.
As time has passed, I’ve fallen into a new routine. My new normal with my fake life and my fake name. My hopes dwindle but aren’t extinguished yet.
Every night while the world sleep around me I work.
